I write an artist statement for each quilt I complete. I consider this task no different than adding a binding or label. My statements are short - 300 characters. I do alter a statement if a exhibition has a specific theme. My statements are kept in a google document. I use a standard statement for materials and techniques.
Here is an example of my statement for "Gdansk" submitted for Ebb and Flow. (No it didn't get juried in...)
“Gdansk” In World War this city was nearly totally destroyed by both German and Russian armies. By the 1980’s it was the birthplace of the Solidarity movement that helped break the stronghold of the former Soviet Union. Today it is a beautifully restored city with a vibrant cultural life.
Techniques: Whole cloth commercially printed from artists' images. Painted with acrylics, pigment sticks, liquid watercolor and other mediums. Free motion and stitched on a stationary machine.
Materials: cotton, acrylic paint, dye,liquid watercolors, pigment sticks, pencils,stamps, thread, and other media
